Internet Provider Time Warner Cable Sued By Riot Games And Netflix For Fraudulent Practices
Time Warner Cable (TWC) now under the name Spectrum, is currently being sued on behalf of Riot Games and Netflix for fraudulent practices in a 87 page complaint filed by attorney general Eric T. Schneiderman in the course of a 16 months investigation.
Thanks to data from Netflix and League of Legend developers Riot Games, the company is now under investigation for purposely changing the bandwidth on their services, with complains from people that the internet was up to 80% slower than what the provider advertised.
70 pages in the file complaint, it's stated by Riot Games with data straight from their League of Legends servers, that included slower internet speed, buffering and other performance issues in the game. Time Warner Cable subscribers were experiencing slower internet speed and significantly greater latency compared to subscribers from other internet providers.
It was stated that TWC would fix League of Legends' performance issues if Riot games would pay them a sum of money, basically holding the game's performance in a ransom. Riot Games agreed and paid them and undisclosed sum of money in august 2015. This isn't the first time cable companies held potential performance capabilities in ransom. Netflix likewise paid Comcast and Verizon a sum of money after they throttled their services in the past. Likewise, the performance started to improve both occasions when Netflix and Riot games payed the ransom.
The lawsuit is a very major accusation, as it states that TWC not only could've deceived their customers, but they also deceived the government. Eric Schneiderman demands a compensation for all of TWC's customers, and as the company was ranked the second largest internet provider in the US by revenue only behind Comcast, its safe to assume the fine would be considerably huge if found guilty.
