Evolve's Developers No Longer Working on Game

  • 240

The developers of Evolve, Turtle Rock Studios, will no longer be working on the game. The entire game will now be handled by 2K. Turtle Rock wanted to continue working on the game but they were released from their duties. The reason they have to hand off the game to 2K is because their contract ended. They sold the rights to Evolve to 2K. They knew what they were signing for, which is pretty much what happened to Left 4 Dead, which they also gave the rights to Valve. So this isn't the first time this has happened to Turtle Rock. Maybe they should stop signing contracts where they sell all the rights to the games they develop?

The game has gone far. It was a paid game. The game went downhill when there were major DLCs. Significantly cutting the game's content with a paywall. The players weren't pleased with that. To revitalize the game, the game then went into stage 2 and became free to play with all DLC free. It still doesn't seem to be enough, which is why they wanted to bring stage 2 to consoles...  but it never happened.

Since 2K will now be taking care of the game, they made a blog post about what changes. It seems like nothing really. Servers will remain online for the "foreseeable future". But there won't be any more updates to stage 2 because apparently stage 2 "is complete". For now, 2K will just focus on daily operation and regrowing the PC audience. They don't plan to bring stage 2 to consoles any time soon until the PC audience has been taken care of. Oh wells. Console owners lose again.

Any of you guys play Evolve? Will you continue to play after hearing the original developers are no longer working on it?

Hard to tell if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I can't find the quote at the moment but I clearly remember reading an interview some time ago with one of the higher ups on the paid original (although I have no idea if he was a 2K guy or a TR guy) who effectively admitted that the base game was designed to be little more than a framework from which they could hang paid DLC. And of course that's exactly what they did, with the truly ridiculous amount of DLC that followed.

I'll try to find the quote and add it to this post so you can see for yourself. But my point is that if this is accurate and the game was intended to be little more than a vehicle for selling DLC (which it did very successfully - for a short period of time), then it's days as a F2P title are surely numbered. In some respects you could say that (from the publisher's point of view) it no longer functions as intended.

But who knows, maybe it still has a future - it will be certainly be interesting to see. Personally I love asymmetrical multiplayer games, it's just a shame that this one was more about the marketing strategy than the game.

Well we all new that Evolve base idea was good but wrong results.

At the end that massive payment game turned to F2P and now they say that the developer leaves and 2K takes the job to make this game something good so sure they will make the same like Mafia III and will end like a epic fail.

Personaly i never had interest on evolve when it was Pay do something but after all the problems i'm not going to spend time on it.

For everyone who payed for it and still plays it as F2P I hope to be wrong and 2K saves the game but with the current games industry status i see it realy black for this game.

Hard to say, a company change is 50/50, things may change less than you hope. Not a console user nor played the game, but a lot of games tend to try to be P2W, it sort of is a win for them until the money runs dry.

Damn if paid DLC was really their intentional, then they clearly don't understand the current gamers' mentality. Gamers almost never want massive amounts of DLC to a very short and repetitive game. I remember playing the beta and it was fun but it was very limited. Then when it came out, I asked my friends who had it if it was any better than beta. They said it was pretty much the same and kinda got boring. Adding that DLC in there is probably going to anger even more players when they wanted more free refreshing content.

Damn, 2K dropped the ball for Mafia 3 as well? Uhh... well, I wouldn't expect much from Evolve Stage 3 then.

Planetary

I have about 100Hrs in Evolve Stage 2 and really enjoy it. They just pushed a patch the other day too with a new monster and map.

Sad news indeed. >.<

Sad to hear.  That being said I didn't really care enough about the game to want to play it.
